"King, O. G., dealer in boots, shoes, hats, caps, trunks, furs, leather, valises, umbrellas, etc. At prices that cannot be duplicated, and every patron appreciates, No. 113 west side ofpublic square, Newark. ...

"Mr. King was born in Newark, this county, in 1838. He received his 
education in the schools of this city, and at the Commercial college of
Columbus, Ohio. He commenced as salesman in his father’s (Nathan King) boot and shoe store, when a young man, and continued as such until in 1861, when he succeeded his father in the business, which he has since been conducting successfully. ...

"In 1872 he erected the commodious brick building west side of the public
square, eighteen feet wide by one hundred and fifty feet deep, three stories
high, with a basement same size of business room, in which he is now carrying on business. The basement is used as the boot and sole leather department.

On first floor, the main business salesroom contains a variety of goods in any size or make to be desired; gents’ fine boots and shoes department and coarse wear, ladies’ and children’s wear of all grades and sizes. In hats and caps there is a full line, which lacks nothing new, novel, or fashionable for men’s, youth’s or children’s wear. Also furs and robes of all grades and qualities.

The second floor is the trunk and light leather department, which is well
filled with trunks of all sizes, and light leather of all grades. He employs
from ten to a dozen efficient salesmen, who are always willing and ready to wait on and accommodate their many customers."

I, Oren G. King, of Newark, Licking County, Ohio, of sound mind do make the following as my last will and testament.
 
At my decease I desire all my just debts and funeral expense paid, I desire
that my life insurance be so distributed that my dear son Fred H. King shall receive an equal portion to the rest of my children.
 
To my dear wife Bianca H. King I give and bequeath my residence property together with all the furniture contained therein excepting my grand piano which I bequest to my dear daughter Daisy M. King. I also give to my dear wife my horses, carriage, buggies, wagon and harness. I give to my dear friend Wm L. Prout the sum of $500.00.

It is my desire that my dear wife enjoy the balance of all my real and personal property (excepting such life insurance as has been directly disposed of in the policies) during her life time using only the interest and not disturbing the principal.
 
At my wife’s decease, I desire all of my property not disposed of heretofore to be divided amongst my children equally, such amounts as may be apportioned to my two daughters Amy and Daisy to be safely invested for their special benefit and on which property they must never place any mortgage or incumbrance, at their decease should they leave any issue then
each one’s share shall go to her own children or child. Should either die without issue then said property to go to the other sisters and brothers of said Amy W. and Daisy M.

I appoint my dear wife and my dear friend William L. Prout as my sole Executors and it is my request that no security be required from them.

"King, Nathan, retired, was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on the twenty-third day of December, 1810. He is a son of Joseph and Catharine King. In July, 1830, he in company with his father’s family emigrated to this county. They came from Cleveland on the first canal-boat, through from Cleveland to Newark. He, in company with his father, at once engaged in the manufacture of fur hats, and dealing in boots and shoes, also keeping on hand a large stock of fur hats.
 
In 1835 they commenced the manufacture of silk hats. Then they 
manufactured both silk and fur hats for a number of years, when they gave up the manufacture of hats and gave their entire attention to dealing in boots, shoes, hats, caps, etc., which they conducted several years. In 1840, his father retired from business, leaving the entire business in his charge, which he carried on with success until in 1860, when, he was succeeded by his son, O.G. King, and he retired from all business cares, and is now living a quiet and retired life, highly esteemed and respected by all who know him. In 1832 he married Miss Adaline S. Granger, of this county, born November 15, 1815. She was a daughter of Colonel Oren Granger, a pioneer of Licking county.
 
Mr. And Mrs. King settled in Newark, where she deceased September 17, 1860. By this union he had two children, Catharine and Oren G. Catharine married Christopher Weaver of Mt. Vernon, who died several years since, and she is now living with her father in Newark. Oren G. married Miss Bianca Holton, of Newark, by whom he has four children, two sons and two daughters."

"Jeptha L. Holton was born in New Jersey and came from there to Steubenville in 1840, and was engaged in the mercantile business until 1856. In that year he went into business at Indianapolis, Ind., where he remained eight years and moved from there to Kalamazoo, Mich., where he died in 1866. He married Miss Mary A. Frazier, a daughter of William Frazier, who came to Jefferson County in 1798 and later was a soldier throughout the War of 1812. He was one of the pioneer millers in the county and with his son, James Frazier, assisted in founding the iron works which later became the old Jefferson Iron Company. They were also identified with other pioneer industries....

[His son,] "J. L. Holton was educated in the Steubenville public schools and at Princeton University. After leaving college he was for two years chemist for the Jefferson Iron Works, but in 1887 came to the Gill Bros. Company and has been in the glass manufacturing business ever since. On the reorganization of the company in 1901 he was made vice-president and general manager. In addition to this he is interested in other business enterprises."

In Sept, 1674, Thomas was granted forty acres of land in Suffield, CT w/ an eight acre, twelve rods wide “home lot” on High Street. The land was confirmed to Thomas on June 12, 1678. On December 25, 1685, he was granted land on the road to Springfield (what is now known as Crooked Lane). This land was sold in 1806 by his grandson, Capt. Abner Granger.

Thomas was selectman as early as 1694.

On September 21, 1722, Thomas was elected to take the second pew in the meeting house (town officers allocated seats according to one’s estate, age, or office).

In 1708-9 he was assigned as one of a three-member committee to build the first bridge in Suffield over Stony Brook. At a cost to the town of $41, the bridge was completed in 1715.  Thomas earned
8 shillings for his engineering skill.

Samuel ye 1st farmed on his father’s homestead on the Springfield road, (Crooked Lane). In town, he was appointed hog reeve and fence viewer. He was a captain, presumably a commander of the militia. There were five Samuel Granger living in Suffield at one time, so he was named "ye first." When several of the same name were living in a town, it was a custom to call one ye first, another ye second, etc., according to the date of their birth.
